Huma Press Competition

Huma Press is an imprint of Turath Publishing,(www.Turath.co.uk)  which was formed in 2002 with the sole aim of producing high quality English translations of classical Arabic Islamic texts. Both organisations are based in London, and whilst Turath Publishing focuses on classical works, Huma Press aims to foster the growth of literacy and the arts in the global Muslim community. To this end we run a yearly competition – The Huma Press Awards, for novels, short stories and poetry written in English by Muslims from around the world. The Junior Award is open to those aged between 11 to 16, and our Senior Award for those 17 and above.

Winning authors will have their works published by Huma Press, either individually (in the case of novels) or as part of an anthology (in the case of short stories and poems). The deadline for entry into the 2010 competition is 10 Feb 2010, so get writing! For further details please visit www.humapress.com

Beauty and the East

Hello.  I would like to introduce you to Beauty and the East TV. We are an
entertaining lifestyle vlog and web tv show that showcases “Fab Fun
Middle-Eastern/Muslim Talent” – filmmakers, musicians, comedians, designers,
and artists- all from different cultures who share their personal stories
and talents in a positive way.  Beauty and the East TV aims to improve media
stereotypes of Muslims and encourages dialogue with the West through the
universal language of art and expression.

Launched in April 2009 and hosted by fashion designer Samira Atash, the site
and original episodes are growing in popularity by targeting one of the
fastest growing niche audiences in the U.S.  According to *The New York
Times
*:  “Muslim Americans spend about $170 billion dollars on consumer
products a year in the U.S., this figure is expected to grow rapidly as the
population expands and younger Muslims build careers. Ignoring this group ?
estimated to be about five million to eight million people, and growing fast
? would be like missing the Hispanic market in the 1990s.?

Online and video marketing is an essential tool in advertising for any
company. Online video ad revenue for the U.S. in 2009 is expected to reach
over $700 million, a 35% increase from 2008. By 2011, that number could
reach well over $1 billion. Beauty and the East TV offers affordable web
banners
, video ads, product endorsements, channel & event sponsorship
opportunities.

Beauty and the East TV’s new episode is our coverage from the Arab-American
Comedy Festival, starring celebrity comedians Ahmed Ahmed, Dean Obeidallah,
Maysoon Zayid, and Aron Kader.  You may visit the site here:

I look forward to hearing from you!

Film Night: The Baptism of Jesus Christ

Network of Islamic Artists
Meeting at St. Ethelburga’s (London, UK) on Wednesday, October 8, 7pm.

Film Night: The Baptism of Jesus Christ
For this gathering we are concentrating on the medium of film and will
be showing the documentary film The Baptism of Jesus Christ:
Uncovering Bethany beyond the Jordan. As part of the evening there
will be an opportunity to hear from the film’s director Mustafa
Gouverneur Henry and Most Reverend Metropolitan Kallistos of Diokleia
[tbc].

Space is limited; to reserve a place please email us at
nia0001@googlemail.com

It is a truly fascinating documentary film uncovering the pieces of
the ancient mystery of where Christ was baptized. Lost in time for
almost 1000 years, it is the remarkable story of the site’s
rediscovery and the ongoing excavations taking place there. Only 5% of
the area has been dug until today. Who knows what else lies beneath
this place and what it could reveal about Jesus Christ and the birth
of Christianity.

It concerns the area known as `Wadi al-Kharrar’ on the east bank of
the river Jordan, the “Bethany Beyond the Jordan” of the Gospels. A
complex of unique churches, baptismal pools and monasteries are
amongst the important discoveries uncovered so far. The area, since
the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, was a military zone and heavily mined
making it impossible of access. However in 1994 after Jordan and
Israel signed a peace treaty, archaeologists begun their excavations…

“A remarkable account of recovering a foundational part of our
Christian heritage.”
- The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams. Head of the
worldwide Anglican Communion

“An important, groundbreaking film…This film takes its subject
seriously. Christians must see this film. Everyone should see this film! “
- Dr. William F. Vendley, Secretary General. World Conference of
Religions for Peace, New York

“The Baptism of Jesus Christ: Uncovering Bethany Beyond the Jordan” is
a beautiful film that will speak to pilgrims of all faiths…This film
is a blessing.”
- The Rev. Canon Charles P. Gibbs, Executive Director, United
Religions Initiative

Rose,

Thank you for your interest in the Esse Quam Videri (To Be Rather Than

to Seem) Project. UNC Chapel Hill’s Center for Global Initiatives is

sponsoring this project in an effort to provide Muslims in North

Carolina a unique venue for sharing a clearer, more realistic sense of

self to the wider community.

I am traveling the state this summer working with Muslims interested

in creating an image and essay that reflects their identity.

These will be complied into a website, exhibition, and book.

I can schedule a time to come to Charlotte again if members of your

group would like to meet with me. I have photographic equipment  and

computer design programs like photoshop at my disposal to help with

individual projects.  I am an experienced community based artist.

Initially I was going to wrap everything up by August but CGI has decided to

keep the project open for submissions through the fall with a website. My

availability to work with people directly (come to their community,

photograph them, etc) will be limited after August 8th as I will going back

to teaching full time for the fall and spring semesters.

As I mentioned to you, it is probably best to settle on what the

participant wants to say then brainstorm ways to make it visual, then

support it with a short essay (2 -3 paragraphs). I can start this

process with anyone by email.

Please feel free to share this project with your members. There is no

cost involved. Here is a link to the  project on the Center for Global

Initiative Website ( http://gi.unc. edu/research/ Esse-Quam- Videri/Index )

My process blog is listed below.

Thank you.
