Rose,

Thank you for your interest in the Esse Quam Videri (To Be Rather Than

to Seem) Project. UNC Chapel Hill’s Center for Global Initiatives is

sponsoring this project in an effort to provide Muslims in North

Carolina a unique venue for sharing a clearer, more realistic sense of

self to the wider community.

I am traveling the state this summer working with Muslims interested

in creating an image and essay that reflects their identity.

These will be complied into a website, exhibition, and book.

I can schedule a time to come to Charlotte again if members of your

group would like to meet with me. I have photographic equipment  and

computer design programs like photoshop at my disposal to help with

individual projects.  I am an experienced community based artist.

Initially I was going to wrap everything up by August but CGI has decided to

keep the project open for submissions through the fall with a website. My

availability to work with people directly (come to their community,

photograph them, etc) will be limited after August 8th as I will going back

to teaching full time for the fall and spring semesters.

As I mentioned to you, it is probably best to settle on what the

participant wants to say then brainstorm ways to make it visual, then

support it with a short essay (2 -3 paragraphs). I can start this

process with anyone by email.

Please feel free to share this project with your members. There is no

cost involved. Here is a link to the  project on the Center for Global

Initiative Website ( http://gi.unc. edu/research/ Esse-Quam- Videri/Index )

My process blog is listed below.

Thank you.
